Mahjong in The Heights: Pull Up a Chair at Incanto

Something new has been showing up on the tables at Incanto lately, and it’s not on the menu. If you’ve been looking for mahjong in The Heights, this is your spot — our little bungalow on Yale Street turns out to be just about perfect for it. Small tables, warm lighting, a cocktail within arm’s reach, and nobody rushing you out the door.

Why Everyone’s Suddenly Playing Mahjong Again

The game itself is over a century old, but Houston has fallen for it all over again. Axios reported that mahjong events in Houston grew 867% in a single year, more than almost any city in the country. A lot of the new players are people in their 20s and 30s who wanted a reason to put their phones down and actually see their friends. Mahjong gives you exactly that — four people, one table, a couple of hours, and a running conversation with a little friendly scheming mixed in.

The Heights was always going to catch this wave. It’s a neighborhood that likes its evenings slow and its gathering spots small. That’s us.

What a Mahjong Night at Incanto Looks Like

Picture it: your foursome around a table, tiles clicking, and our bartenders sending over European-inspired cocktails between hands. Somebody orders the truffle popcorn because it’s the ideal don’t-look-at-my-tiles snack. A pizza shows up when the games run long. Whoever’s winning buys the next round — that’s not an official rule, but it should be.

If you’d rather play outside, the patio works beautifully on a Heights evening. Dogs welcome out there too, though we can’t promise they won’t judge your discards.

Want to bring your group? Reserve a table on OpenTable or send us a note through our contact page, and check Instagramfor themed nights and pop-ups — that’s where new events at Incanto show up first.

New to the Game?

Don’t overthink it. Mahjong is a draw-and-discard game — you’re collecting sets and pairs, and the first complete hand wins. It’s closer to card games you already know than it looks. The American Mah-Jongg Association has resources if you want to study up, but truthfully, one evening at a table with players who know the ropes will teach you more than any rulebook. And mahjong people are generous teachers. Ask anyone who’s been adopted by a table mid-game.

Make It a Standing Thing

The best mahjong groups are the ones with a regular home. If yours needs one, claim a corner of Incanto. We host private events for up to 58 guests, so anything from a weekly foursome to a birthday tournament with six tables fits here. Tell us what you’re planning through the contact page and we’ll take care of the rest.
